Holi with Krishna by Sampada Sharma

In our society, the death of a husband brings along with it a second death when their widows are expected to live a life of total abandonment. For someone who isn’t even allowed to wear coloured clothing traditionally, playing with colours on Holi is a long shot. But in 2013, hundreds of widows, breaking away from tradition gathered to play Holi with one another with flower petals and coloured powder (gulal) in Vrindavan while singing and playing bhajans of Lord Krishna.

Before this, these women who were respectfully called ‘mayyas’ or ‘matas’ were only allowed to play Holi with Lord Krishna or ‘Thakurji’. Shunning taboos, they now gather at one of the oldest Krishna temples in Gopinath Bazaar to play Holi.
