 Indian Revolt of 1857

By Aditi Mishra

1857-59 Indian Mutiny was a significant but ultimately unsuccessful revolt against the British East India Company's control in India, which served as a Sovereign power on behalf of the British Crown.

The revolt was the first organised act of opposition to the British East India Company. It began as a Revolt of the sepoys of the British East India Company's army, but the masses gradually joined in several factors that Contributed to the Indian Revolt of 1857, including political, religious, economic, social and military Aspects.

Some Causes are –

1: Religious and Social causes- Racism, or racial discrimination was thought to be a significant cause of the 1857 Revolt, in which Indians were exploited and prohibited from interacting with Europeans.

2:Political Causes- British policy of expansion through the Doctrine of Lapse and direct annexation was the political root of the rebellion.

3:Economic Causes- Various Taxation and Revenue Policies have a significant impact on peasants.

4:Military Causes- In terms of Salary, pensions, and promotions, Indian soldiers encountered much discrimination from British officials.

The Impact of the Revolt of 1857 rattled the British East India Company’s foundations and exposed the Company’s ineptitude in managing Indian administration.

The adoption of the Government of India Act dissolved the rule of the British East India Company.

It signalled the start of the British era, which gave the British government the right to rule India directly through a representative.

Furthermore, it was planned to put an end to the Bengal Army’s domination.

The Revolt fail because due to a lack of solid leadership and limited resources. The other reason for failure was that the Revolt took place mainly in the Doab region, Sind, Rajputana, Kashmir and the majority of Punjab.

Even in terms of workforce and money, the Revolt lacked resources. On the other hand, the English received a regular supply of soldiers, money and weaponry.

The Conclusion was the Revolt of 1857 was unparalleled. Many parts of Indian Society we’re brought together for a similar purpose, although in a limited way.

Even though the revolution failed to achieve its goal, it did sow the seeds of Indian nationalism.
