     The BJP’S government has taken the decision on Friday of renaming the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award. Accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of harbouring a “myopic political motive”. It further demanded that he should also change the name of stadium named after him or late BJP leader Arun Jaitley. The Khel Ratna award is the highest sporting honour in the nation and carries a prize money of Rs 25 lakh. Home Minister Amit Shah calling it a “ true tribute” to one of India’s greatest sportspersons. Defence minister Rajnath Singh said Dhyan Chand is a symbol of inspiration and pride for Indian sports persons. The decision comes a day after Indian men’s hockey team ended the 41-year wait for an Olympic medal when it defeated Germany 5-4  and secured first hockey medal for the country since the Moscow Olympics in 1980. 

      Major Dhyan Chand is regarded as one of the greatest players to ever play the sports. He was a central part of the team that brought India three Olympic medals. He was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1956 and his birthday celebrate as sports day in India every year. It is high time named our sporting awards after our sporting legends. It is the right step. Dhyan Chand is our sporting hero and hockey legend and hockey is our national game. Former Ajitpal Singh said that, although recognition came late but late is better than never while appreciating Prime minister’s decision, he also include that Sports awards should always be in the name of sportspersons and there is no bigger sportsperson in the country other than Dhyanchand ji. Major Dhyan Chand is India’s most legendary & loved sporting icons; it is only befitting that India’s Highest Sporting Honour be named after him. His life’s and achievements has inspired the sportspersons who have achieved glory for India. Dhyan Chand was the captain of the Indian hockey team in Berlin Olympic 1936, he played his final international match in 1948, scoring more than 400 goals during his international career. His son, Ashok Kumar Singh, too went to become an important member of India’s Olympic field hockey teams. After putting some sensational performances for the  Army Hockey team, he stepped out the ladder to represent country on the international arena. He spearheaded an Indian team which won its first ever Gold medal, scoring 14 goals at the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. Captain and undisputed topper of field hockey, Dhyan Chand has imprinted his achievements for one and all for various generations. These move announced by Narendra Modi on Twitter. PM Modi told that, citizens have tweeted me making requests regarding rename of Rajiv Khel Ratna award and Respecting their sentiments. The Khel Ratna award will be known as “Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award”. The amazing performance of the men’s and women’s hockey team has captured the imagination of our entire nation, PM said that, there is renewed interest towards the sport that is emerging  across the length and breadth of India.  With the government’s  decision Khel Ratna award has become the second award in the country to be named after the ‘Wizard of hockey'. The country’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports, which was started in 2002, is known as the Dhyan Chand Award. The history-making Indian women’s hockey team surpassed all expectations by entering the semifinals of the Games for the first time.

    Union Sports Anurag Thakur welcomed PM Modi’s decision and described the legendary hockey player as the most loving sportsperson in the country. Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development Minister thanked the prime minister for renaming Rajiv Khel Ratna Award as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
