Taliban updates

All you need to know about what’s happening between the Taliban and Afghanistan.

Look at these pictures, This was Afghanistan back in the 1970s, before the invasion of 1979, so much ahead of its time. And what it looks like today is completely different. War zones, terrorist attacks, bombings, and on the path of destruction.

People live in fear, every day. They are uncertain of their future. But what brought such a situation in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has always been a topic of interest for the world powers. Numerous factors have contributed to this, one of the major ones being its geographical location. Its prime location is located in mid-east Asia. Anyone who wants to trade within Asia has to pass through Afghanistan. The political scenario in Afghanistan has been very fluctuating. It went from having good governance to no governance and so on. There were ideological differences between the political parties. This led to interference from countries outside.

1994: This was the year when the name Taliban began to gain popularity.1996: A major milestone was achieved by the Taliban this year. Complete control was gained by the Taliban over Afghanistan. This brought along strict norms and harsh conditions for people to live in. Women could not move out on their own. They always had to be accompanied by a man of the family. Education for the far-fetched fetched dream. And then came 9/11. Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda group attacked America. America had to seek revenge and teach a lesson to Osama Bin Laden. But he was sheltered by the Taliban. Hence, in September 2001 an army led by America invaded Afghanistan to dethrone the Taliban as the government and help Afghanistan set up a lawful government.

It is estimated that 2312 US military personnel have died in Afghanistan since 2001. The US army was successful in keeping the Taliban under control to a significant level. Until, it decided to call back its troops to the USA. In February 2020, a peace agreement was signed between the Taliban and the USA. The agreement guarantees to prevent the use of Afghan soil by any international terrorist groups or individuals against the security of the United States and its allies and also sets a timeline for the withdrawal of all U.S. and Coalition forces from Afghanistan.

The Taliban though hasn’t showcased any such actions which may defend its promise of maintaining peace. US president Joe Biden announced that all the military troops will leave Afghanistan before September 2021, exactly 20 years after the 9/11 attacks. Since the agreement was signed, the Taliban has been acting more aggressively. The following map is from 2017

Whereas this is the latest we have.

The Taliban says peace couldn’t be restored in the country until the president resigns. They want to set up a coalition government in the country but with them having more power.

If the Taliban takes control of Afghanistan completely, it surely possesses a great threat to the world as well as India. It has friendly relations with our notorious neighbour Pakistan as well as it is trying to build bonds with China. With 85,000 active military troops, it is stronger than ever. India needs to strengthen its security and develop a stronger strategy for itself.
