On Monday, Jasprit Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 100 wickets in the longest format of the game. Bumrah achieved the feat in the fourth Test against England when he removed Ollie Pope for 2 in the second session of the final day. With Pope’s wicket, Bumrah broke former Indian skipper Kapil Dev’s record. Kapil Dev had taken 25 Tests to reach 100 wickets while Bumrah achieved the milestone in his 24th game. Former India bowler Irfan Pathan is next on the list, having reached 100 wickets in 28 matches while pacer Mohammed Shami occupies the fourth spot. Seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is the fastest Indian bowler to reach 100 wickets. He had achieved the feat in just 18 games during the West Indies tour of India in 2013.

Meanwhile, England batsmen failed to rise to the challenge of battling it out against the Indian bowlers in the second session after the visitors took the honours in the first session of the fifth morning in the fourth Test at the Kennington Oval.Bumrah currently has a bowling average of 22.45, which is the best-ever among Indian bowlers to first 100 Test wickets. The next best is Ravichandran Ashwin, who had average of 24.56 when he picked up his 100th Test wicket. Bumrah, who started this Test with 97 wickets to his name, brought India right back in the fourth Test with two early wickets in the first innings. He bowled one that had extra bounce with inward movement after pitching which Burns dragged back to his stumps. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah has been nominated for the International Cricket Council (ICC) ‘Player of the Month’ award for August following his brilliant performances with both the bat and ball in the ongoing Test series against England. Besides Bumrah, the others in the men’s category included England Test skipper Joe Root and Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi, the ICC announced. Indian bowlers showed their magic and confidence in the second innings. While left-handed spinner and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja picked two wickets along with Shardul Thakur who took the opening wicket by dismissing England opener Rory Burns, Bumrah picked another two wickets to put pressure on England batsmen.
