GUJARAT GOVERNMENT SIGNS MoU WITH AMAZON: TRADERS REACT

Amazon India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Industries and Mines Department, Government of Gujarat on Tuesday. MoU is a signal of willingness of the parties to move forward with a contract and is not a legal binding document. The MOU can be seen as the starting point for negotiations as it defines the scope and purpose of the talks

In this memorandum, amazon will train and gain the trust of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises from the state on Amazon Global Selling which will help them to sell their made in India products across 200 countries around the world. With this programme, homegrown businesses get instant access to global markets, benefiting from Amazon’s distribution capabilities and global footprint to scale rapidly and build sustainable exports businesses.

Indian traders' body CAIT has criticised Gujarat government for signing a pact with Amazon, saying, "On one hand, Amazon is facing various charges and investigation for wrongdoings by CCI and ED, and on the other, a state government is making pacts." CAIT added, "Traders feel cheated at the hands of Gujarat government for shaking hands with a known law offender company." "It is highly regretted that the lawyers of the Central Government are exposing Amazon in various Courts including Supreme Court but on the other hand the State Government of Gujarat is entering an MOU with Amazon," it added.

The Confederation of All India Traders is upset by the decision of Gujarat’s government as they allege Amazon, a US based company engages in anti- competitive practises and violation of e-commerce rules.

Amazon sought this decision will help to drive e-commerce exports from the state.
