Another successful day it has been for India where athletes defied their disabilities and brought 3 more medals home. 18-year-old Praveen Kumar became the youngest athlete to win a medal for India at Paralympics. He bagged a silver in men’s high jump T64 by clearing the 2.07m mark. This is also the 4th medal in high jump at Tokyo Paralympics for India. Another young gun Avani Lekhara won bronze in 50m 3P rifle after scoring a total 445.9 in the finals. This 19-year-old has now set a record by winning 2 medals in a single Paralympics. The 3rd medal today came setting another record for India. Harvinder Singh at the age of 30, won the first medal in archery in the history of Paralympics or Olympics. He bagged a bronze by defeating South Korea’s Kim Min Su in a shoot off.

This does not end just yet. We have the chance to witness historical finals in badminton as all our men’s singles has advanced to the semis. Suhas Yathiraj and Tarun Dhillon in men’s singles SL4 and Krishna

Sagar in SH6 are through to the semis. Whereas, Pramod bhagat and Palak Kohli made it to the semis in mixed doubles SL3-SU5. Our star shot-putter Soman Rana finished 4th in the finals with a best throw of 13.81m. Other than this, Prachi Yadav, first Indian canoer to enter the finals, finished 8th clocking 1:07.329 in 200m VL2 sprint.

India sent its first ever Paralympic contingent in the year 1968, since then India won a total of 12 medals till 2016. The total medal tally of India at Tokyo Olympics has eclipsed that mark with 13 medals with major contenders still fighting. It’s been indeed the most successful year for India in terms of individual sports.
