FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2022

25 june 2022.

Anita Alvarez, an American artistic swimmer, was on the verge of drowning after falling unconscious in the pool during the world championships in Budapest on Wednesday, before being rescued by her trainer, Andrea Fuentes.

Fuentes, a four-time Olympic simultaneous swimming medalist from Spain, hopped into the pool after seeing Alvarez drown to the bottom at the later part of her solo free final schedule.

She was given hospital treatment next to the pool before being transferred on a stretcher.

Fuentes had to rescue Alvarez for the second time after she lunged into the pool while in an Olympic qualification event last year and managed to pull the American and her swim partner Lindi Schroeder to safety.

Fuentes stated that doctors would evaluate Alvarez, 25, on Thursday before making a decision on her involvement in Friday's team event.

"I had to dive because the lifeguards didn't do it, so it was a decent scare.", said Andrea Fuentes, coach of the United States artistic swimming team. He added, "I was scared because I saw she was struggling to breathe, but she's feeling great now, she's at her best,"
