What is poverty?

Poverty is a socio-economic phenomenon in which a section of the society is unable to fulfil even its basic necessity is of life conserving food, clothing, housing, education and health.

In simple terms poverty is hunger, poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not being able to go to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, poverty is fear for the future, and not having enough to eat proper meals in a day. Poverty is losing your children to illness brought by unclean water which is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom.

One-fifth of the poor in the world live in India. 260 million people in India are living below the poverty line. Now the question arises "What is the Poverty line?" So basically it is an imaginary line or level of demarcates the population into two groups: the poor and the ones who are not poor. It is measured on the basis of minimum consumption or income required to maintain a minimum standard of living.

Poverty as a Social issue

Poverty itself is the biggest cause of poverty. It happens when there is a hen-egg phenomenon. We called it a vicious circle of poverty. The vicious circle of poverty says that a man is poor because he is poor. Since a man is poor, he can't afford proper food medical facilities and education. Therefore, his physical and mental productivity remains low. Since his productivity is low, he continues to remain poor. The same is applicable at the macro level. An economy with a low level of income can spend less on its physical and human capital and therefore, its production continues to remain low. It continues to be a poor economy.

Some of the main causes are

1- Lack of getting benefits from natural resources.

2- Avoid low-quality work.

3- Lack of hard work leads to poverty.

4- Anti-social habits (gambling, drinking, theft robbery)

5- lack of religious activity

6- economic resources (example about a rich boy who is only dependent on his parents. when he wastes money resources he is automatically moved into the stage of poverty).
