Between 2007 and 2018, the suicide rate for teenagers and young adults aged between 10 and 24 increased by 60%. In the last decade, suicides have increased exponentially among young people. Due to a lack of real-time data, it is difficult to assess trends and find out the reasons for suicide. During the pandemic, due to quarantine and self-isolation, many young adults lost their lives to suicide. Most had been lonely and contemplating suicide for a long time. There was a huge rise in teenagers being admitted to the hospital with suicidal thoughts and attempts.

During this time, suspected suicide attempts were higher in adolescent girls than boys. Suicide rates differ between boys and girls. Girls think about and attempt suicide about twice as often as boys, and tend to attempt suicide by overdosing on drugs or cutting themselves. The increase in the number of visits to the emergency department could be attributed to social distancing. Schools and colleges were closed so most of the youth felt a lack of connection to school, teachers and friends.

Some common signs in teenagers and young adults with suicidal thoughts are lack of response to praise, increased anxiety, problems focusing, changes in eating and sleeping habits that could negatively impact their health, etc. That person may feel overwhelming hopelessness and frustration. Drug and substance abuse, using non-prescription medicine and overdosing is also very common risk for attempting and completing suicide.

Adolescence can be a period of tremendous possibility, but it can also be a period of stress and worry. Remember to keep a lookout for signs of suicide in teenagers and young adults and seek help anytime if you need to.
