WHAT IS STEM LACKING?

What is STEM?

STEM is an abbreviated form of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is a broad term used to refer to these groups of academic studies. It is also typically used to address an education policy or curriculum in schools. Nowadays, a pattern has emerged where lesser and lesser college students are  pursuing degrees in the STEM field. Students now see more opportunities and have more interest in subjects in the humanities and commerce fields. It is only right, as their areas of interest are not STEM.

So what is lacking in STEM that makes students lose their interest?

Ever since elementary school, students are exposed to STEM subjects and have them up till high school. There is rarely any hands-on learning up till high school for most students. A field trip or two to education institutions, but nothing more than that. If we bring hands-on learning to elementary and middle school students, we may see a rise in interest in these subjects. We need to make subjects interesting and exciting for students.

Another lacking factor is the lack of parental involvement. Both parents and teachers find it hard to find opportunities to extend students' learning at home. Academic achievement can be boosted by parental involvement and support, as shown by research.

The third lacking factor may be the lack of role models in STEM. Students who study in elementary and middle school have little chances to meet STEM professionals apart from their teachers. Outside of their doctor or dentist, they rarely interact with such professionals. This then acts as a limiting factor and hinders their understanding of STEM. Increasing their exposure to such experiences increases their chances of pursuing STEM for their further education.
