Engagement of Japan with China – What to expect in future ?

As neighbours, China and Japan are the subject of a number of worries. In addition, China and Japan have strong economic ties as well as frequent cultural and people-to-people contacts, making it one of Japan's most significant bilateral connections. The importance of Japan-China relations is rising, not just for the two nations themselves but also for regional stability and global prosperity. We will continue to engage China in dialogue, work together on issues of shared interest, and forcefully establish our stance while attempting to forge a "constructive and stable partnership.

The Japan-China Economic Association, the Sino-Japanese Economic Knowledge Exchange, and active research into the Japanese economy and corporations. From Japan, Chinese policymakers learned about corporate structures that respond to the market, organisational solutions to state ownership problems, evidence that consolidation could improve economic performance and technological advancement, and a strategic commitment to creating large state-owned enterprise groups. However, neither unilateral "diffusion" nor unifying influence were produced during this period of intense engagement between China and Japan. Instead, it demonstrates how China has carved out its own path of economic development through what I refer to as "policy collage"—the deliberate selection and synthesis of policy concepts and methods from various worldwide sources.

International relations have been significantly impacted by the bilateral relationship between China and Japan. States with comparable political interests tend to trade more with one another than with other states, and territorial disputes, clashing political relationships, and projected military conflicts are all linked to reduced trade flows.

The juxtaposition of political antagonism and a significant economic cooperation in this regard confuses the reading on the China-Japan relationship. The consequences of the China-Japan relationship reach far beyond the scope of their bilateral relations because both nations have close economic and political ties to the United States. After the administrative zone containing the Senkaku Islands was recently renamed by Japan's Ishigaki City Assembly on June 22, there was a strong outcry in China.A significant conference between their leaders that was supposed to redefine the parameters of bilateral collaboration to take wider global challenges into account has also been derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. President Xi's long-awaited state visit to Japan has largely failed. The summit preparations have now been suspended completely for this year after first being scheduled for March and then being moved to the fall.

Overall, the internal dichotomies of conflict and collaboration in China-Japan relations have existed for a long time and are unlikely to alter. In this multifaceted relationship, where American security responsibilities to Japan overlap with Chinese aspirations for regional hegemony, there is no simple transaction taking place. The impact of the United States' involvement in their bilateral relationship is therefore more than anticipated. Therefore, Japan would respond with appropriate support if a second Trump administration pushed hard for the stationing of US land missiles or the decoupling of American supply chains from China. One would be able to predict the future of ChinaJapan ties more clearly as the world recovers from the pandemic and the US Presidential elections in November.Even so, it's still quite difficult to decipher this bilateral relationship's meaning from the tea leaves.
