Chhattisgarh govt extends hydropower policy till 2032

In a cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mr Bhupesh Baghel at his residence office here today, the proposal for extension of Departmental Policy-2012 has been approved to encourage the establishment of small hydropower projects in the state.

The Small Hydropower Policy was started by the Energy Department in the year 2012 to encourage the establishment of hydropower projects up to 25 MW capacity. The same deadline ended after 10 years, i.e. in  February 2022. Chhattisgarh has an identified potential of about 1,200 Mw in the SHP. Now it has been extended to 2032.

The state cabinet has also approved the Chhattisgarh State Hydropower Project (Pump Storage Based) Establishment Policy 2022 to encourage investment in establishing pump storage-based hydropower projects in the state.

It is in the state's interest to extend the duration of the Small Hydro Electricity Policy to encourage proper exploitation and investment of available water sources in the state.

At present, small hydropower projects of 75.65 MW capacity are being operated in the state.

After a preliminary survey, about 25 sites have been identified for setting up of small hydropower project of 385 MW capacity. In order to attract investment in small hydropower projects in the state, it has been decided to extend the duration of the small hydropower policy by another 10 years.
